NINE

Keke groaned, rolling over in her bed. Her head pounded excruciatingly and she wondered if someone had just bashed her skull with a bowling ball. Her eyes were still shut as she swung her arm around, reaching for the sheets; when her fingers met with a solid piece of…flesh?

She bolted upright and screamed at the top of her lungs.

“Keep it down, Kee,” Rock’s hoarse voice caught her by surprise. “Trying to sleep here.”

She screamed louder, “Oh, no! NO. NO. NO. NO!” She tried to push him off the bed with the soles of her feet. When that tactic didn’t work, she yanked the bed sheets with extra force. His arms flailed as he tried to hang on and fell off the edge of the mattress.

Rock recovered and stood up. When Keke sputtered and pointed at the area below his waist, he reached for a nearby pillow to cover his privates. His emerald eyes glittered, a brighter shade than she’d remembered. His blond hair was disheveled and his body looked so hot she couldn’t stop openly staring. She shook her head to force herself to concentrate on what had happened between them.

“C’mon now, Kee.” He took a deep breath and groaned, clutching his head at the slightest movement. “WHOO. What a night, eh?” he flashed pearly whites, trying to make light of the situation.

Keke yanked the covers up to her chin. “What happened?”

She watched him scratch his beard, and then he tensed up. As if in slow motion, he lowered his left hand and on his ring finger and she clearly noticed a circular piece of bright aluminum wrapped around it.

“There’s no way,” he said in disbelief. “How? We didn’t…”

Keke pulled out her left hand from underneath the covers and brought it up to her face for a clearer focus. “O-M-G!” she exclaimed. “What’s that smell?” She leaned in and sniffed the matching foil around her own ring finger. The sweet scent was distinctly from some sort of imported chocolates, the vintage kind she could only find from Keller’s Sweets and Treats.

She eyed the faux wedding band, and returned to a nearly naked Rock, then back at her finger. Without saying a word, she pulled the sheets over her head and let out a piercing wail.
